How to dress your windows this summer
Despite much of the country experiencing inclement weather of late, rest assured, summer is here.
So, with high hopes for a more positive weather outlook in the coming weeks, I wanted to share my favourite tips for how to dress your windows in light of the longer days we’ll be seeing.
These tips and thoughts could also be helpful if you are thinking about re-dressing your windows in time for next year, or if you're in the middle of a refurbishment project and planning your interior finishes.
Let’s talk about UV
Although we love it when summer (finally) arrives, it’s a good idea to be mindful about the damage UV can do to fabrics. Protect your interior fabrics and furniture by adding a sheer Roman or voile curtain behind your normal curtain. Screen fabrics with better UV protective qualities are also available for roller blinds.
This is especially relevant for south facing windows, but also applies to any window which receives a lot of direct sunlight. For maximum protection, it’s better to opt for a black out lining instead of a standard lining, as this will help protect the fabric over the years, especially silks.
Blinds or curtains?
The great thing about roller and Roman blinds is that when made to measure, they can fit snugly within a window recess to give a clean, tidy aesthetic and minimising the amount of light that gets through.
Sheer curtains will need either a separate track or a duel track system so that the curtain and sheer curtain sit together exactly.
Something else to consider is using voile and sheer curtains on their own to protect interior fabrics and to dress the window (as above).
This is an effortlessly stylish solution for windows which are not overlooked - I actually take my heavier curtains down and swap for a sheer curtain to give windows a summer and winter wardrobe!
And for that extra touch, it’s worth remembering that all of these window dressings can be automated with a remote control or hardwired into the mains, for that extra elevated experience.
